How to Grow Trees in Your Town

This month I will present the final house pattern to our guild. This pattern is easy, which means it’s a quick sew. I finished the five I want for the quilt in just a few days of “building.” This week I’m “growing trees.” That’s what I call it, anyway. Thus far, ten trees. Not too bad.
Fabric trees made of improv pieces. After putting the smaller pieces together, I cut them into snowball shapes, then added sky and grass with a tree trunk.

The process is slow because I decided to use up some of the scraps that are loitering all over the studio. So, first, gather them up. Then improv them into treetops. Find sky and grass. Oh, don’t forget the tree trunks. Trees look odd without trunks. Sure, some grow with limbs touching the ground, so you can’t see the trunk, but it doesn’t translate well into fabric. Anyhoo, these five above are all made from improv blocks that I trimmed into tree-like shapes. They are based on…

these two trees (there are actually six) that are part of the pattern for the first set of houses. I’m not liking the house/tree/house/tree…. look, so I might play around with them. We’ll see. I still have lots of other, more pressing, things to do first. Like build Main Street!

These three pines are simple, unless you can’t math. I can’t math. That means I ripped the skies out a couple of times because I put the pieces in wrong. (It makes a difference.) Nevertheless, I like them and they are easy to sew, so I may make a few more.

Then take a look at these two oddballs above. The first one uses HSTs and doesn’t take long unless you have to improv the pattern. Why can’t I just leave good enough alone? The second one uses foundation paper piecing (FPP). It’s the only one in town because FPP needs a math brain. Again, I don’t math. Rather, I can’t math. I got confused about how the tree lean. I don’t know, it’s just too much for my brain, and I’m not willing to keep at it till I figure it out. I’m sure I got close a few times, but … nah.

The houses above are the cabins that we’re making for the month of September. All of mine are made. Below are the houses that we were supposed to make in August. Yay! These are finished also. Again, only five houses. It’s one reason I need so many trees. Something has to fill in the space.
