My Cotton Quilters’ Guild is very traditional. I’m very improv modern. (I’m the only one.) There’s a clash here. It occurs every year when CQG puts out its block of the month challenge. I participate. Every year. I HATE it. Let’s countdown the reasons I HATE traditional BOMs and haven’t worked on one since this finish.
5. Little to no learning. Every block is different so whatever I’m supposed to learn I do only once. There’s no practice or repetition to really learn the block. I suppose I could make more than one quilt, but why put myself through double the agony? No thanks.
4. Same difference. So the blocks are different. Sure. But they all end up being some form of nine-patch. I’ve got nine-patch under my belt. I could use practice in that mathing, but not nine-patches.
3. Math. I do not math well. In fact I math horribly. I read the directions. I figure out which colors belong with each piece. Then I have to measure and cut. In other words, math and mistake. Repeat.
2. Waste. Every year I pile up the wrong cuts. I used to think I’d eventually use them, but then there are too many things to keep up with. Let me sew already!
- The look. This really is the big one for me. I just don’t like the blocks I end up with. They just look oldish. Like someone’s grandma made it with her scraps. This year, it looks like MY grandma made it with her old dresses. These fabrics are the modern version of calico, I suppose. I’m over calico, but a wonderful CQG friend gave them to me as a gift when I couldn’t go road tripping with them. I thought it would be the best fabric for this BOM. I cringe to think she’ll find out.
