A New Finish! Emmy Blue’s Quilt

That’s right! A finish! I’ve worked on this little blue and white log cabin quilt for a few weeks. Okay, possibly longer. I wrote about it here. At that time, I had no clue as to a name. But it needs a name, right? Yes, my quilts must have names. So, I worked on that for a minute while quilting it and decided on Emmy Blue’s Quilt. It is now completely finished: bound and labeled! Yay!

This is my version of the quilt that the main character, Emmy Blue, sews in the story, The Quilt Walk, by Sandra Dallas. Emmy Blue’s family moves to Golden, Colorado, to live on the frontier. As she travels, mostly on foot, Emmy Blue sews a quilt top made from blue and white strips and a red center hearth. Click here to read a synopsis of the novel. My inspiration came directly from the story, using the same colors, though in more modern blues and whites.

I imagine a preteen girl would appreciate the book. However, the quilt blocks have many hard lines, so I decided to soften those edges with flowers, vines, leaves, and berries. Even mushrooms! I had great fun quilting this one. In fact, it’s one of my favorites. I’ve taken 20+ pictures and videotaped tight shots of the motifs to easily review them later.

A troop of mushrooms
Seed pods
Vines of small flowers
And 60s designs to make Mid-century Modern flowers
Prickly, stickly flowers
Squarish, rectangularish flowers
Space-age ones
I-can’t-believe-this-works, squiggly flowers

I will deliver the quilt and novel to the Baton Rouge Modern Quilt Guild, which will, in turn, give them to a program which will eventually give them to foster children. My modern guild came up with the idea, provided used books, and gave instructions to enjoy the process.

I have started drawing some of these motifs in pencils and pencil colors to help me with muscle memory and give me a quick reference the next time I get to play on the long-arm.
