The Baton Rouge Modern Quilt Guild has a challenge each year that I generally participate in. Not that I put much into it, but I do make an effort. I’m not a competitive person, so bragging rights go to someone else. I suppose I participate for the growth. Some of the topics have been difficult and require research. I quickly recognized Andy Warhol. However, I knew about only a few of his works. So, I put away my work on the Improv Bom and began researching Warhol’s life and work at The Andy Warhol Museum.

I decided I wanted to draw his iconic eye glasses. At first, it was a little difficult to get the proportions right, but eventually I was satisfied with my template.

I had one small issue with the background. Originally, the yellow and lime were touching and blended in in comparison to the pink and blue. After stitching in the eyeglasses, I HAD to make the change. So, rip, rip, rip. Two seams later and everything was back together and looking much better.

That brought the little quilt to the quilting stage. Since Warhol was most prominent in the 60s, I decided to quilt spirals in a heavy black to give it a groovy vibe. Maybe that wasn’t the prettiest option, but oh well!

Finally, I put the binding on and it’s ready for the show at LSU art gallery in Baton Rouge. I decided to snap a few photos for this article and saw, for the first time, that the glasses are not evenly spaced from top to bottom. They looked fine, until I switched the green and blue blocks. I didn’t notice until the quilt was completely finished. Fixing it would require lots of ripping, requilting the spirals, and sewing down the glasses. Unfortunately, I don’t have time.
Oh wow! And such a pretty idea. I hate it when I realize I’ve made a mistake AFTER everything is done. It’s still cute and you could fix it after the show.
I agree, but it happens to me fairly often. I get so immersed in my ideas that I forgot to step back and look over my work. Oh well.
