Marcotte Family Takes Lafayette

The Marcotte Family has had a great summer, despite the heat wave, a heat bubble, and heat that “feels like…” Most of Louisiana can answer the “it feels like” with descriptions such as an oven, a concrete city, napalm, desert, etc. It’s not even August, so we still have two months before our week of autumn comes.
At the visitor’s center in Lafayette, patrons can view the swamp from the boardwalk.
Since we don’t have the two best seasons of the year anymore (thank you climate change) we have to adapt or live indoors (my choice anyway). Therefore, we have been trying to find indoor things to do with the grandchildren in our care. I’m not sure that we can afford said grandchildren. Apparently the grandparents of the world pay the energy bills for places to visit with grandchildren.
Today we drove down to Lafayette and visited the Children’s Museum of Acadiana. We enjoyed ourselves for at least two hours and could have stayed longer, but the old folks were tired and cranky. And that drive home in the rain was not changing our minds.

The museum has many areas or stations to explore. Our favorites were the store with self-checkout, the cafe which has Cajun-inspired foods, and the bubble area. We made bubbles three separate times. Making huge bubbles never gets old. Richard and I joined the fun. He even tried the station that puts you in the bubble. Other stations included a dental office, an eye doctor office, a pet/vet store, an ambulance, blocks of all kinds, making play dough to bring home, a farm with a treehouse, and sensory play, which is really just a place where you pick up after other people’s children so your children can explore.
Coffee and watermelon? Family favs but not at the same time!
In fact, if there’s one negative take-away, it’s that so few people picked up before leaving an area. In the cafe a family sat together while their children stacked every dish and food on their table. When the kids ran out of things to pile on the table, everyone simply walked away. Our kids and I put food and dishes back in the kitchen area so we could play. Honestly, though, by that time the kids had gotten tired of the game. Still, I ordered a cup of coffee and a roll, despite the wait-staff being ready to clock out.
