Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church

It’s been a while since I last wrote about a church. Actually, it was this post on Cabrini in Alexandria, so I thought this one would be a good fit. There are many things that might interest you. So, let’s get started.

The Sunday that I was at the quilt retreat, I attended mass at Our Lady of Mercy on Marquette Street in Baton Rouge. One of the things that I like about the Catholic church is that mass is the same. I can count on the prayers, the readings, the Eucharist. Everything in the right order. Only the homily is different, but it comes at the same time that any other mass would have the homily.

The organ! Of course the music and singing are stunningly beautiful.

I do admit that the church architectures can be extremely different. Compare our little mission-style church that can hold about 100 people to the great cathedrals that Rich and I have strolled through. It can take a long while to pray the mass, see the whole church and take pictures in a cathedral. Little Flower, our church, takes about five minutes.

Our Lady of Mercy is a beautiful church with higher than usual ceilings, exposed beams, stunning stained glass, and mosaic images. I was impressed, to say the least. I’m certain I took over 20 photos and would have taken many more, but I was not alone. Or in my own car. Although, Leigh was very gracious and told me to take my time.

One of the stunning mosaics. The entire Way of the Cross is in mosaic built into the wall.
Shots of other stained windows. Notice the scenes in the individual panes.
A cloth painting of the Virgin Mary…I could not walk away!
