  • Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Crazy Quilting

This post is from a time when I was on a crazy quilt kick?  I’d look over Pinterest and other sites for ideas for the crazy quilt bolster that I was working on at the time. That bolster was never finished or maybe I gave it away, who knows after 7-8 years. But I’m back into stitching because my friends–Glen, Yvonne, Tracy, Crissi, and now Pam–are planning a retreat on which we’ll make a boro jacket. I’ll need some stitches in my repertoire of sewing skills. So a look at a few Pinterest boards, including this new one, “slow-stitching embroidery handwork needlework.”

When I was pinning the crazy quilt ideas, I’d found Crazy Quilt Passion, a blog that makes for some interesting reading,.  I love the pastels and the beading and all the extra embroidery in the photo.  Annette is a true artist and made this pink and blue piece to decorate a bag. The pins of stitch types or how-to… are some I found while searching for ideas for the boro jacket. See how things keep coming back around?

When we were younger, my sisters accused me of living in the wrong century.  I supposed they just knew me and it’s probably true that I’d have been very happy as a Victorian lady. But the Acadians were not people of wealth or fancy, so I’ll just stay here in the 21st century. Not that I’m wealthy (in a monetary sense) but I sure am living it up when it comes to anything crafty.

How lucky are we that we have access to so many forms of education? Remember when Pinterest didn’t exist? Searching was so time-consuming. And before computers?! All opportunities to learn had to come from another human or from books. The Victorians had only each other. Ahh, but what they produced! Lucky us that they did.

Thanks for visiting. Leave a comment and let me know which of these is your favorite.

I started a new board! Titled “slow stitching handwork needlework” this one is all about embroidery and beautiful stitches. Now, don’t get the idea that I’m going to be stitching anything so intricate. Nor will this passing fancy last very long, but while there’s a hint of interest, I have to jump on the pinning because once it’s over. The fancy really is over. Regardless, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites with you.

    Satin stitches and French knots
    I love the colors!
    Red and white ornaments, anyone?
    One feather, a dozen stitches!
There are stitches and seed beads in this paisley design.

  • (2013) Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Quilting Motifs

I was working on a chevron quilt for my sister and needed some ideas for quilting it. I decided to look for a few ideas to inspire us all.  These are just a variety of some of the quilting patterns I found on Pinterest.  Edit: I’ve added a few new motifs at the end of the post.

The motifs above come from an interesting source: they are from http://www.norbarfabrics.com which is a furniture and bedding store.  The motifs are those that customers can choose when ordering custom spreads, comforters, etc.  I can see how they would work very well on a quilt, can’t you?

I hope you find some inspiration in today’s post. You can find almost all of the Sunday Quilt Inspiration posts on Pinterest now.

  • (2016) Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Christmas Lights

Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights in Natchitoches, Louisiana. www.NatchitochesChristmas.com:

We spent this weekend in Natchitoches at the Lights Festival. Natchitoches bills itself as “The City of Lights,” which has been celebrated since 1926.

Creole Christmas in Natchitoches - Natchitoches, LA Christmas Festival - One of my favorite events when I lived in LA.:

One of my fondest memories is of my sisters and me playing and rolling down the hill in front of the lake. I also remember picking stickers out of my clothing, which adds to the humor.

Now one of my sisters lives on the lake just beyond that hill, and she is loving enough to invite us (the whole crazy family) to her house for the first weekend of December, which happens to be the festival weekend. That means lights, parades, fireworks, a craft fair, boat flotilla, and of course, Santa.

And Christmas quilts to go along with the scenes because, believe me, this weekend was cold and wet (and unbelieveably rainy) so anyone out there would have wished for an extra-warm, heavy quilt. The rain was so heavy that the parade was canceled for the first time since 1959.

Though not quilts, these are adorable and certainly would be something that you’d likely see in one of the many boutiques along Front Street.

Here’s hoping you’re getting into the Christmas spirit and enjoying the Advent season. We have not begun decorating, but that’s okay, I prefer to spend time with family. Perhaps next weekend the stuff will come down and someone will put it all together.

I discovered charcuterie boards via Pinterest a while back and have been considering creating a board. Richard and Adam made a few to put in my Griffin’s booth, so there’s even more interest. At the first book signing my beautiful friend Shera had a charcuterie board to rival any Pinterest photo I’ve seen. And so, more and more I’ve been needing to start a board. I will in a minute.

First I want to tell you this: I decided to feature a few Pinterest followers (it’s been so long since I’ve done that. Sorry.) The very first person on the now very long list is Marlene Pauman and guess what is on the top of her boards! Charcuterie boards. How perfect? Let’s do it!

    A Christmas tree!

Jeab Chawiwan has the cutest pincushions. I just couldn’t resist. Yes, I pinned half of them. Aren’t you going to?

Joyce McCracken has some really sweet Christmas diy ideas. We’re quickly running out of time, so here are a few to pull together in those moments you are able to sneak in.

I hope your last week of Advent is wonderful and blessed and filled with Jesus’ love.

  • Pin It Weekly #336

I’m just going to pretend that there was never a break from Fleur de Lis Quilts’ Pin It Weekly. Though I honestly haven’t been able to jump onto Pinterest as I normally would, I must admit to stealing a bit of time in the parent pick-up line and occasionally when I can’t sleep. Most recently I’ve been pinning to a new section in my “mixed media” board. I’ve had a little fun drawing and coloring using pages from old books. So the drawings in “flower sketches” are mostly to help me remember what flowers look like. Yes, I know. I like faster inspiration than my brain can provide.

Can you see how just looking at these sketches and drawings could inspire a person? Sometimes, while Richard is watching a movie I’m not particularly interested in, I pick up my color pencils and just have fun. Most I’ve made into cards for my sisters, but a few I’ve glued onto cardstock to make bookmarks for the kids. If you have ideas of how I might use a few more, I’d appreciate your input. They tend to pile up if all I do is draw and color.
