From Wright Houses Here at Home

Today, Wright’s work is still considered to be some of the best truly American architecture in the country. [My Modern Met]

My sister Laura and her husband, Gary, just finished building a house on the land where we grew up in Plaucheville. It’s the cutest house built in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect from the 1950-60s era. Very Mid-Century Modern. Laura became a fan when she toured a couple of his houses. One of them in Crystal Bridges, Arkansas, when she and her daughter visited. I was a tag-along on that trip. What a lucky person I am to be invited.
Laura and Gary’s house still in the building stages.
Anyway, they built their house in the same general style, and pulled it off beautifully. Now that it’s finished, I decided to build my own Wright-inspired house in fabric! Why not? I am providing houses to the Cotton Quilters’ Guild and need to come up with ideas. I’m avoiding using other patterns for this project. Maybe I’ll use them for something in the future. Who knows?

My little Wright house is not so detailed as theirs, but I’m fairly sure you can see the similarities and how one inspired the others. I’m lucky in that I viewed several Wright homes and must admit that his concept of the house conforming to the landscape is one I admire.
And while we’re on the subject of houses, I made a few changes to my first row of houses. Note that the first ones the grass is growing to the bottom of the trees. After seeing some of my friends’ versions, and liking them more I ripped out a bit of grass and replaced it with sky. I like this much more and am already half-way through making all the changes.
What do you think? Is it worth the extra 20 or so minutes? Let me know what your thoughts in the comments, please.

  1. Oh yes, definitely worth the time, Mary. It’s funny how a simple change can make such a difference. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Thanks, Hannah. I agree and will make the changes–though not before the meeting on Monday. There are not enough hours in a day. Have a great weekend, Mary
