A Modern Tryst with a Silly Surprise

I’d not seen my modern quilt friends in such a long time. I should have gone to retreat in July, but that didn’t work out. Attending the August meeting, I walked into the classroom at My Sewing Shoppe in Baton Rouge. What a reception!

So what’s this about a modern tryst? Well, I was supposed to hand-off a round robin block. Hmm, I knew who was supposed to get it, but I couldn’t find her. Now, understand, I’ve been to lots of retreats with her. Still. That’s her, someone pointed out. She was looking away, so all I could see was her back. And it didn’t look like her back. Are you sure? Of course, every other person was sure. And, sure enough, it was Belinda. With a new haircut and slimmer backside. I don’t have to try. I can make people laugh especially when it’s embarrassing. My life.

The meeting went really well. The new officers are steering the course in the right direction, that is certain. We had a program about applique which was actually a video from the Modern Quilt Guild. Very informative, I found several ideas that I want to try eventually. I need to find the video and bookmark it for later.

After the video, Colleen (the coordinator) had several people show some of their applique work. We talked about what type of applique each uses and how to achieve the same look. Joyce even had a few small quilts with a different type of applique. I made a small wall hanging using the technique, but hers is so much cleaner that I had to take a close look to figure out what she did differently.

I wasn’t able to get pictures of everything and they aren’t great. But these should still give you the sense of the incredible work this guild is capable of.
