GSQA Day with Old Friends

I’ve been a member of the Gulf States Quilting Association for several years, perhaps longer than I realize. I’ve been a circuit teacher for at least 7-8 years. I’ve also convinced a few of my Cotton Guild members to join. Two members, Stephanie and Beth have become great Pursuit of Excellence (POE) teachers.

POE participants attend a class four times a year, learn techniques or a pattern, and then bring that information back to our guild. I did it a couple of times but found that our members at the time didn’t really care. The drive to a POE is usually at least an hour or two since most of the POEs occur in large towns. It seemed fruitless and disappointing.

This lady’s vest is made with yoyos. We have a guild member who has a million yoyos. I took the pictures for her.

However, the guild has changed quite a bit since Covid. Unfortunately, we lost many of our elderly members. Several have passed and a few moved to be closer to their children during the loneliness of Covid. Most of our new members are younger by 20 years and some are just learning quilting. These new members have been open to about anything we are willing to present. So POEs are back on. Since Beth and Stephanie are best friends (and share a grandchild), they enjoy the drives and the classes. I’m so thrilled to have more members participating.
I found this quilt interesting. I wanted to sit down and figure out the pattern. It’s turning the blocks that makes it look difficult.

The photos here are all from the GSQA meeting. There were many more quilts, but I have so many photos of quilts that I’ve become more particular about taking them. The VFW post where we met is quite nice, but it is also dated. The lighting is far from satisfactory for photographing. Even I could see that, but computers can fix almost anything these days, so I took advantage.

I sort of joined the club and offered to organize registration to help out one of my oldest GSQA friends. In fact, Lori is the person who got me into GSQA. Hmm, and now I’m helping HER out. Isn’t that what friends are for? Now, if I only knew what I’m doing, other than a bit of light editing. That may put me into a sticky situation. Luckily, I won’t be able to break out my red pen!
I’ve seen this Hurricane Block before. I might play with the pattern idea using improv circle cuts.

This is the opportunity quilt that will be raffled at the quilt show later this year.

I love learning. Anything goes for the most part. Today I discovered that I can make collages on Pinterest! Of course, I immediately stopped writing this post and played a little. It’s cluttered, but not horrible for my first time trying. I may have to create a few more, because it was fun. Looking through my thousands of pins. I mean 14,314 is no small feat…and that in heart, quilts alone! Go check it out. It’s even organized so you can find whatever quilt genre you’re interested in.
Finally, if you haven’t purchased a copy of either This World So Fierce or A World Alone, now is a good time. Click on World Series in the tabs above and it will take you right to the bookstore. Thank you in advance and don’t forget to leave a note if you’d like for me to sign it.
